In honor of National Kitchen and Bath Month, celebrated in October, Tyre Realty Group will share incredible kitchens and bathrooms this month that are sure to provide ideas for home owners in eastern North Carolina.

A kitchen that attracted our agents is blogger Elana Loo's recently renovated kitchen in Hawaii that has a fresh, youthful vibe. She calls the style "tropical modern bohemian." Perfect for a home at the beach, it also reflects the blue skies of our area.

Rather than use traditional white subway tile, Elana decided to channel the island's blue water and install aqua hexagon tiles on the entire backsplash wall.

Open shelving is a modern storage solution that allows for the display of functional items. Elana used local Hawaiian jacaranda wood for the open shelves, she notes, and "mounted the brackets to the studs to get a seamless look with the tile."

White Shaker-style cabinets with brass geometric hardware and brass pulls contribute to the kitchen's sleek style.

Big, open farmhouse sinks are a hot trend, and Elana says she is thrilled with her decision to install one.

Here are a few more takeaways from Elana's kitchen:

   * Pick a color palette -- Elana used aqua, white and brass with light wood accents -- and stick to it for a more cohesive appearance, especially in small spaces. Think about installing coordinating cabinet pulls and sink fixtures, counter tops and appliances.

   * A rectangular Oriental rug pulls together all of the colors and adds a soft texture among all the hard surfaces in the kitchen.

   * Elana selected kitchen necessities in her chosen color palette to add to the soothing ambiance of the space. Notice the pineapple-shaped light wood cutting board and the brass tea kettle.

   * She curated the items displayed on the shelves and counters, keeping functional items at hand like plates, bowls and utensils while adding in some personal touches like small plants and a framed photo.
